2011 Weekly Schedules
EACH DAY WE CREATE A DIFFERENT WORLD AT
CAMP, TAILORING OUR ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE OUR
THEMES.
Each week we will post our schedule of days
and events... (Everything applies to Rookie Camp as
well as Summer of Fun. We just offer the thrills and chills
in a kinder, gentler fashion for our younger campers...)
Our schedule evolves throughout the summer, which is why it's
difficult to publish a calendar that is "set in stone." We
are constantly seeking ways to "tweak" old favorites while
brainstorming ideas for new and unique themes to craft our
activities around. While reserving our right to make changes
as necessary, here are some of the days/dates we're looking at for
Summer 2011…
Week 9:
Monday, August 22nd - The Best of the
Best. We've served up over one hundred different
contests, stations and events this summer. Some were so good
- Mess for Success, Why Not, Human Video Games - they deserve a
reprise. Monday we'll cram all the fun into one massive
afternoon. Don't miss it.
Tuesday, August 23rd -the Sherlock Holmes Scavenger
Hunt will once again have our amateur sleuths collecting
visual clues and solving the master puzzle to find out where the
evil Professor Doriarty (Dori Morris for the seventh time
performing with pipe-chewing panache) is hiding. Beware the
false clues and trick ending…
Wednesday, August 24th - Still Don't Do This At Home
Day. Bring on the food fight and its cleansing
aftermath...the Human Car Wash. The best day of this...or
any...summer.
Thursday, August 25th - Coach Steve's
Carnival. Step right up and try your luck, dunk the
counselors and scarf down the cotton candy. Kids plan all
year for this day. So do we.
Friday, August 26th - The Goliath Water Slide
will rise 30' above the campus and send us out on a tsunami of
ecstasy. What a day! What a summer!
Week 1:
Monday, June 27 - NERF Mania. Day One of
camp will be a festival of throwing, kicking, catching and shooting
anything and everything squishy.
Tuesday, June 28 - SOF and Rookie
Olympics. Which powerhouse country will amass the
most medals in our yearly "quadrennial" event - Bhutan, Uruguay,
Togo or San Marino? Vegas has its favorite. Who would
you bet on?
Wednesday, June 29 - The Magnet 500. We
break out our go-carts, scooters and tricycles and send them
careening around the campus.
Thursday, June 30 - Presidential Scavenger
Hunt. With the holiday weekend looming, we take a
trip through the history of the executive branch as we scour the
campus for past Presidents, the good, the bad and the
unelectable...
Friday, July 1 - A Fractured Fourth. Come
with us as we take the Fourth of July to new heights of wackiness
and irreverence - the George Washington Apple Pie Fight, Thomas
Jefferson Tie-dye and Marquis de Lafayette Car Wash. White
shirts for dyeing, bathing suits and towels highly
recommended...
Week 2:
Monday, July 4 - NO CAMP. GO TO A PARADE,
GO TO A BARBECUE, READ THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE…
Tuesday, July 5 - The Patriot Games.
Sample the recreational pastimes of our founding fathers:
Evading the British, the Minuteman Mile, Kicking King George and
many more…
Wednesday, July 6 - Holiday Day. A 2010
favorite returns to celebrate some of the world's wacky and obscure
festivals. Tanzania Waterfall Day, Polynesian Clothing Relay,
Antarctica BBQ to name a few…
Thursday, July 7 - Mess For Success. A
commemoration of all things dirty, gooey and fun. What kid
could resist?
Friday, July 8 - Theme Park Day.
Borrowing from the best, we create our own low-tech merriment and
mayhem: tea cups, waterslides, gorge crossing... I
wouldn't be surprised if the experts at Disney Imagineering sent a
spy to snatch some of our ideas…
Week 3:
Monday, July 11th - Blast From the
Past. We'll climb into our Time Machine to offer our
wacky takes on the Cold War, the Space Race, the music of the 60s,
the hair of the 80s and more….
Tuesday, July 12th - Name That
Tune. Always a summer highlight. The
auditorium dissolves in pandemonium as campers race for the buzzers
to reveal the playing song... Is it Barney? Or Justin
Bieber? (They're easily confused)...
Wednesday, July 13th - Survivor
Brentwood. Test your skill, agility and gross-out
quotient in a day of challenges and contests. Find out who
will be voted off our island. Make sure it isn't you.
Thursday, July 14th - Minute to Win
It. Contests and games that will test your agility,
balance, focus and nerve.... The hardest part will to keep
from laughing...
Friday, July 15th - Our trademark
celebration of Christmas in July - it's Snow
Day. We've got the hill, we've got the sleds, you
bring the smiles...and mittens.
Week 4:
Monday, July 18th - The 11th
Annual Alien Hunt. We know they're among us.
Let's see how many we can find…
Tuesday, July 19th - Halloween
will rear its creepy head a few months early. We'll be trick
or treating…with an emphasis on the "tricks." And our Haunted
House is something we plan all year long so you can bet it will be
talked about till the real thing rolls along…
Wednesday, July 20th - Don't Do This at Home
Day. It's our signature day of the summer; it's what
we're all about. We'll graffiti handball walls, dye our hair,
learn to expectorate, throw tantrums, battle with food and hose
down in the Human Car Wash. This is the one day of the summer
not to be missed.
Thursday, July 21st - Celebrating Harry
Potter. 7 books, 8 films, untold magic
moments. We'll embrace them all, though, in the case of the
Whomping Willow, we'll proceed with caution.
Friday, July 22nd -Apocalypse Now,
the water war to end all water wars, will send us into the weekend
on a wave of ecstasy. Water cannons, sprayers, buckets, hoses,
sponges, slip n slides, the pools - no weapon in our H2O arsenal
will be spared as we close down week 4 with a victorious charge
across the campus.
Week 5:
Monday, July 25th…Lights! Camera! Action!
It's Cinema Day. For the fifth year in a row we'll
be rolling film. Our earlier masterpieces you can find on our
website and on Vimeo (*see links on our homepage…). As
always, our campers will be the writers, actors and crew.
(Sorry, I get to direct - it's my camp). With
film-themed activities as the backdrop, it's going to be a
blockbuster of a day. Are you ready for your close-up?
Tuesday, July 26th… Cartoon
Madness. Time to bring our own animated antics to
the Magnet as we explore the wit and wisdom of Sponge Bob, the
evolution of Homer Simpson and the epistomology of Bugs
Bunny...(hey, once upon a time it garnered an "A" on a Yale
philosophy paper). That will not be all, folks…
Wednesday, July 27th. It will
be 80's Video Games Day as the campers get to play
Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Pong, Asteroids and other old
school favorites…from the inside. They'll acquire a new
appreciation - and have a ball - as they'll be the ones who get
eaten, blasted and doused.
Thursday, July 28th… Star Wars.
It's been 34 years since Luke, Leia and Hans Solo light-sabered
their way into our consciousness and their power over us has never
waned. We'll climb into our Millennium Falcon and do battle
against the Empire on the Planet Brentwood….
Friday, July 29th... The Goliath Water
Slide will rise 30' like a watery challenge from the
center of our field. It will be ridin' and slidin' all day
long…
Week 6:
Monday, August 1st - It's the Summer of Fun
Grand Prix. We break out the scooters, go-carts Formula
One "trikes" and whip around the track in speeds reaching
Flintstone-feet proportions. It's a winnah!
Tuesday, August 2nd -
Mythology Day will see the return of Zeus, Athena,
Hercules and all those fun-loving Greeks and Romans. Up for a
little Siege of Troy, horse and all? Should be a blast…
Wednesday, August 3rd - Why Not
Day. The newest arrival on our summer 2011 calendar
will highlight our "anything goes" attitude. Your campers'
suggestions will fuel the afternoon's mayhem. Destined to be
our newest "can't miss" event.
Thursday, August 4th - Spy
Kids. James Bond, Jason Bourne, Austin Powers.
What kid doesn't yearn to be a spy? We'll perfect those tried
and true training methods like tiptoeing, slinking
and eavesdropping... Not even our usual dose of water
play will be able to dampen the ardor of our mini
operatives.
Friday, August 5th - It's Riverworld
- swim, splash and frolic in our wet and wild theme park. No
better way to beat the heat.
Week 7:
Monday, August 8th - Origins.
Everything had to start somewhere. (How come in the great
chicken v egg debate we never hear from the rooster?) From
sports to music to superheroes we will explore, in our singularly
wet and wacky way, those cosmic issues that keep us up at
night.
Tuesday, August 9th - Human Board
Games is back, bigger and better. Human Bingo,
Hungry Hungry Hippos, Battleship, Tic Tac Toe and Twister will have
the campers in the thick of the action. Don't miss it…
Wednesday, August 10th - Medieval
Times. We'll climb back into the time machine and
emerge at the height of the Middle Ages. Water jousting,
chivalry lessons and eating with fingers - the modern world doesn't
know what it's missing.
Thursday, August 11th - Battle of the Bands
& Haight Ashbury Tie Dye. As we near the
42nd anniversary of Woodstock, it'll be peace, love and
ice cream as we get down, get funky in a musically-themed
way. Bring something white to
dip…
Friday, August 12th - The Noah's Ark Water
Park will see our campers slipping and sliding two-by-two
in a day of torrential fun and merriment. The place is going
to be a zoo! Wonder how Noah kept all those animals
clean? Come check out our In-Human Car Wash…
Week 8:
Monday, August 15th - The "Y" Games. With
the X Games recently blowing through town, we've got our own
over-the-top contests and competitions. Water hoops, javelin
catching, pearl diving and spelunking will take us to a whole
'nother dimension of riotous adventure.
Tuesday, August 16th - Bubble Wrap
Day. In the past we've dabbled in
bubble-wrap-abetted Sumo Wrestling and Freeze Dancing. This
year the entire day will be wrapped around the thousand-and-one
crazy uses of that popping polymer. They'll be talking about
this one for years to come.
Wednesday, August 17th - The Amazing Race.
Spanning the globe our campers will see sights and endure
challenges that make them forget they are still safely within the
90049 zip code. Truly amazing!
Thursday, August 18th - Heroes and
Villains. A classic battle between good and evil
will rock the campus. Heroes, both super and everyday, will
face off against legendary malefactors. A cosmic tug of war
may hold the world's fate in the balance.
Friday, August 19th -Apocalypse Deux ("Un"
deluged the campus earlier in the summer) - the water war to end
all water wars, will send us into Week 9 on a tsunami of
ecstasy. Water cannons, sprayers, buckets, hoses, sponges,
slip n slides, the pools - no weapon in our H2O arsenal will be
spared.
